Waterproof Jewelry: Can I shower with 925 sterling silver, 14K & 18K gold, gold-filled, and stainless steel?
Share
One of the most frequent questions we receive at nakit.shop is: "Can I wear my jewelry in the shower?" The honest answer is: It depends on the material. We'll explain what's behind the different finishes – and what water, sweat, and time really do to your jewelry.
🚿 925 Sterling Silver
925 silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, mostly copper. It is a precious metal – but not waterproof in the true sense of the word.
- Water: Brief contact with clear water does little harm, but regular showering accelerates oxidation.
- Tarnishing: Silver reacts with oxygen and sulfur in the air and darkens over time – this is normal and not a quality defect.
- Wear and Tear: The surface can get fine scratches from daily wear, but remains structurally stable.
- Recommendation: Remove before showering, swimming, and exercising. Clean regularly with a silver polishing cloth.
✨ 14K and 18K Gold (Solid)
Solid gold is the most robust precious metal for jewelry. 14K gold contains 58.5% pure gold, 18K gold 75%.
- Water: Solid gold does not react with water – it does not oxidize or tarnish.
- Showering: Generally possible, but soap, shampoo, and chlorine can dull the surface long-term.
- Wear and Tear: Gold is soft – the higher the gold content (18K > 14K), the softer and more susceptible to scratches it is. Over time, a natural patina develops, which many appreciate as a characteristic feature.
- Recommendation: Remove before swimming in chlorinated or salt water. Otherwise, solid gold is the most durable companion.
💧 Gold Filled
Gold filled is not to be confused with gold plating. With gold filled, a thick layer of gold (at least 5% of the total weight) is mechanically bonded to the base metal – this is significantly more durable than simple gold plating.
- Water: Gold filled tolerates occasional water contact well – better than normal gold plating.
- Showering: Possible, but not recommended. Soap and shampoo will damage the gold layer in the long run.
- Wear and Tear: The gold layer is significantly thicker than with gold plating and, with good care, can last many years. However, it can slowly wear off at friction points (clasp, inside).
- Recommendation: Remove before showering, store dry, and clean occasionally with a soft cloth.
⚙️ Stainless Steel with 18K Gold Plating
Stainless steel is naturally rust-proof, corrosion-resistant, and skin-friendly. The 18K gold plating (PVD process) sits on a stable base.
- Water: Stainless steel itself is completely water-resistant – it does not rust or oxidize.
- Showering: The stainless steel core can easily withstand water. However, the gold plating is more sensitive.
- Wear and Tear: The gold plating is thinner than with gold filled and can wear off at friction points over time – especially with daily contact with water, sweat, and chemicals.
- Recommendation: Remove before showering, exercising, and swimming to protect the plating and extend its lifespan.
